THE PORTFOLIO
Why portfolio is important
What is a portfolio?
-
A portfolio is a collection of your work, which shows how your skills and ideas have developed over a period of time.
-
It demonstrates your creativity, personality, abilities and commitment, and helps us to evaluate your potential.
-
When we assess a portfolio, the research and processes you have used to develop your work are as important as the final work itself. They are particularly interested in your most recent work, even if it is unfinished.
-
Do the portfolios differ for different levels of study?
-
Portfolio requirements differ for foundation, undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Make sure your portfolio is appropriate to the level you are applying for.
-
Postgraduate portfolios should demonstrate your ability to research through meaningful investigation, including reference materials and show your arguments to justify the result.
-
What should my portfolio contain?
-
The portfolio should contain examples of research, development of your ideas and final pieces.
-
It might include drawings, paintings, sketchbooks, colour studies, materials investigation, design development (2D and 3D), construction, consumer and market information, written notes, design presentation sheets, or any other types of work you choose.
-
Sketchbooks show your research and help us to understand how you think. They form the background to the more finished work in your portfolio and, together, these tell the whole story of your creative journey.
-
If you have 3D pieces you should photograph and present these within the portfolio and bring one or two physical examples with you if you have a face-to-face interview/portfolio review.
-
What size should it be and how should it be presented?
-
A portfolio can be of any size, depending on what works for the content – A4, A3, etc.
-
You should edit the work and compile the portfolio as a series of projects or studies. Keep the presentation format uncluttered and relevant. Avoid over-decorating your portfolio as this can detract from the content.
-
How do I submit my portfolio?
-
If you are sending your portfolio by post, please do not send original work.
-
Portfolios may be physical, or they may be submitted online. Your College will let you know which format to submit your portfolio in.
-
Requirements differ from course to course, so check the instructions on your course page before you submit your portfolio.

ARCHITECTURE
Architecture portfolio
3D and Architectural Design portfolios need to be innovative. Art Avenue School encourages you to consider the aesthetic quality of what you design and make, whilst examining technical and environmental issues. Your role as a 3D designer can have a powerful impact on the community and society at large. You need to master design from conception to production and try to push conventional limits to design new products. You need to be a creative, independent thinker who can visualize in 3D, make a quick sketch become an idea; then make become a life-size reality and innovative design!
If you have that basic 3D vision and ambition and want to learn how to enrich your portfolio for an application contact London Art Portfolio. We can help you learn through sketching, making and playing in three dimensions; an experiment in a range of materials, improve drawing skills and utilize the computer too.
You will build up knowledge and awareness of traditional craft and production processes as well as 3D digital technologies such as laser cutting, rapid prototyping and computer-aided milling to prepare for an interview. This will also help you how to decide which course to apply and where?
